Ara

1994 Thoroughbred mare

Thoroughbreds, with their broad, flat coffin bones, quickly develop underrun heels and flat feet when shod, or trimmed improperly.  While race training is thought to exacerbate these conditions, even horses with no race training history frequently exhibit these tendencies.  Ara is a typical example.  The upside of this hoof conformation is that heel contraction is generally less of a problem.

I left all of the patchy sole Ara had to offer her as much protection as I could, and took only a touch of heel.  I beveled her toe, but not radically.  In two weeks, we'll see what is exfoliating, and what is growing rapidly, and adjust her trim.

Ara's hairline has relaxed noticeably, and her wall quality is already much improved.
