Lebrix
14 yo Anglo-Dutch Warmblood gelding
03-17-08
Lebrix has a little work to do growing sole
under the coffin bone on his right front, but his left front
shows better collateral groove depth at the frog apex than I had
expected (as do the hinds, as usual!). Right front is clubby; I
would like to take that heel down a bit more in a few days, if
the frog compresses enough for me to do so. There was some
flaring on the lateral side of the right front, as well as some
flaring on the lateral walls of both hinds (which is not
uncommon). A look at the growth rings on the right front shows
there has been pressure at the lateral side of the toe (where
the flare was pronounced) for some time. I've rolled that side a
bit more strongly; the goal will be to even out the growth
coming down from the coronet by alleviating pressure points
along the bottom of the wall. Frogs are contracted but not
thrushy. The fact that Lebrix's frogs were making ground contact
shod, and show no signs of infection, will likely make his
transition easier. We'll fit Lebrix with some Easyboot Epics
tomorrow to protect him on hard/rocky ground until he grows more
sole. As always, conservative first trim; re-check in 3 or 4
days.

Retrimmed today, mostly rolling toe. Heels still show waxy sole and tight
white line through the heel triangles, so I left them where they were. A
thin layer of sole is almost ready to shed on both front feet. The ugly
flare on the lateral right front is gone (as are most of his nail holes,
yay!) Lebrix is tender ("careful" might be a better word) on hard ground
bootless, but moving absolutely beautifully in his Easyboot Epics.

Remember that waxy sole two weeks ago? Turns out it was false sole. Over
the weekend, Lebrix shed out everything from his toe back, including bar
down into the collateral groove on both front feet. I was able to bring
his heels an 1/8th of an inch shorter, closer to a reasonable heel height.
05-07-08
Right front heel height much improved. Some frog shedding on all four
feet, but that central sulcus is still pretty closed up, so Lebrix is on
the list for a White Lightening soak. Lebrix continues to work beautifully
in his Epics!

Lebrix is now working comfortably in the arena without
boots. He shed all four frogs today; the White lightening soak made
some improvement in frog health. We will continue soaking, and Terry
will be applying "Pete's Paste" religiously.
