Paris

12 yo Quarter Horse Mare

Another "navicular" horse begins her road to barefoot....and healing.

Paris was wearing pads of different heights under her shoes. There was Equithane under the right front pad, but only under one side. Hmmmmm. Well...anyway...here's what we're going to have to fix for Paris:

Right front:
Heel is extremely underrun, toe waaaaay out in front of her. The sole in front of the frog apex is very flat; either P3 is a hair away from the ground, or she has built a big layer of false sole and we're not seeing the true bottom of the collateral groove. Her heels are predictably contracted, heel bulbs very pinched. Bars prominent, but not clearly distinguishable from the surrounding sole, which raises the possibility of false sole. Very carved frog (shoer had to get rid of it to apply the pad!) that reeked of thrush when the shoe and pad came off, although there was no visible thrush. I rolled her toe conservatively and relieved her quarters and just barely showed the heels my rasp.

Left front:
Much more upright (thank goodness!) Much less contracted than the right, but still pinched and a poor, sad, skinny little frog that hasn't felt the ground in a long, long time. Very prominent bars, which I trimmed just above the sole plane. I took a modest bit off of her very high heels (maybe a hair more than 1/8") and rolled her toe conservatively.

Next week Paris will get a White Lightening soak to begin to address those frogs! She will likely be ready for a touch up trim by then as well.

One soak last week, and a minor retrim today. Frogs look a little bit healthier, but I'll be resoaking soon; it is the closest thing to a magic bullet for these atrophied frogs and contracted heels. Frequent, aggressive beveling to the toe will g-r-a-d-u-a-l-l-y combat that very, very underrun heel on Paris' right front.

Trim & soak.  Paris' frogs look good, but we will continue soaking regularly to encourage her heels to widen.  She is fiercely holding on the sole/bar material on both front feet.  I beveled her right front toe vertically and gave her a small toe rocker to start encouraging a healthier sole plane.  Left front received a nice mustang roll and a modest heel trim.  I am gradually balancing her hind feet, which were noticeably imbalanced at the setup trim.

Paris is making progress.  She still has not shed out any sole on the right front, but her heel is standing up (YAY!) and she is growing down much better connected wall now.  Left front shed an entire layer of sole, and bar is not growing as fast as it was.  Her hind feet are now balanced nicely!

VERY good trim today.  All of that retained sole she's been holding on to on the right front peeled out today, revealing excellent concavity.  Notice how the widest part of the hoof is now much farther back.

That right front heel continues to improve.  Hoof capsule is not nearly so elongated.
