Pokey
7 yo Quarter
Horse gelding (he's the curious chestnut in the photo)

Well, where
to start. He's a very good boy, that's a great place to start!
:-) Pokey has the "stove pipe" feet we frequently see in shod
horses. Very long hoof capsule (measuring from heel to toe),
very contracted heels (look at the tight, tight crease between his
heel bulbs -- yikes!), long skinny frogs. Base of the hoof
narrower than the diameter at the coronet band. On the positive
side, he has lots of sole to cushion him through his transition, with
the collateral groove at the frog apex nicely buried in concavity at
the toe. I'd rather leave shoes on for a few weeks longer, and
allow sole to build up, than have nothing protecting the coffin bone.
Pokey and his mom, Blondie, just moved into a nice big pasture where
they will get plenty of steps daily!

Just 4
weeks, but already Pokey is less base narrow, and his heels are
beginning to widen. I've been waiting for a shipment of White
Lightening to soak a bunch of horses, and Pokey is on that list.
Both Pokey and mama Blondie are moving very comfortably so far!

A long way
to go, but hey, it's only been 6 weeks! Heel height is getting
there. Did Pokey's first White Lightening soak today; it may
take lots of those, but we should start to see Pokey's heels opening
up and his frogs looking more open and healthy.

Hey, guess
what! The base of Pokey's front hooves is teeny, tiny bit wider
than the coronet band!!! WOO HOOO!!! Pokey's frogs shed
out almost entirely today. More White Lightening soaks in the
next few days to get those frogs opening up. Pokey's toes were a
bit chipped, but his wall is thick and healthy. He has excellent
sole depth and concavity on all four feet.

Nice
progress! Still treating with White Lightening, and showing a
little sensitivity in the frogs, but things are looking healthier.

Pokey's
frogs are much healthier, but we still need to see the central sulcus
open up. More soaks!
