Sawyer, 4 yr old Quarter Horse gelding

01-11-08

This was Sawyer's second trim.  He has very little solar concavity...almost no collateral groove depth at the frog apex...we need to grow some sole on this boy!  He has grown some frog back (it was very carved by his last farrier), but I would like to get him on daily antifungal frog treatment and see if we can help widen it!  I did not touch his heels in his first or second trim except to give him a small heel bevel to encourage the plane of the foot to change in line with the well-attached wall we're growing down from the coronet band.

WE HAVE SOLAR CONCAVITY!!!!!!!  YIPPEEEEE!!!!  I was seriously worried after Sawyer's last trim; he just didn't seem to be building any solar depth.  But he popped out sole today when I picked out his feet, and voila!  Sawyer has very upright pasterns, a rather steep shoulder angle, and he is somewhat over at the knee.  He is very clubby on the left front, somewhat clubby on the right.  I will continue to keep his toes strongly rolled to keep his dorsal wall from flaring, as club feet can tend to do, and keep his heels trimmed to a little more than an inch of collateral groove depth.  Eventually I would like to see his heels a little bit shorter, but for now, he is comfortable.  As his frogs get healthier, I'll address the heel height a bit more aggressively.   Keeping his feet balanced as they were meant to be, instead of trying to compensate for his conformation by modifying his trim, will help keep Sawyer sound.

Getting a little more aggressive on heel height.  I may do a White Lightening soak on Sawyer just to make SURE there aren't any evil little critters munching on his frogs...the central sulcus is not at wide open as I would like to see it.

Sawyer's dorsal flare is almost grown out!  He will always sport more heel on the left front, but I am very happy with where we are after this trim, finally!

Slight toe rocker and heel bevel added to Sawyer's very clubby left front to try to lengthen stride a little and maybe get him using that heel more.
